Evening All :)
If you've been partaking in the Some Odd Girl Facebook Fun Day, you'll know there's loads going on over there right now. As a part of the proceedings, I've done my very first tutorial. Whoop, whoop. Actually, I've done it twice. Why? Well, guess who didn't check her photo's as she went along, finished, uploaded, and discovered they were all blurry? DOH!
I’ve been loving my pencils a lot lately. I can achieve things with them that I’m not even close to doing with a Copic! Strangely, I find it easier to try things in pencil. If I do it with a Copic (clouds anyone?!) it will undoubtedly go wrong. Practice in pencil first, I seem to get a better result and it makes me braver with the pens. Anyway, enough waffle!
Recently, I was asked which are the best pencils? That's like saying Copics or Promarkers? How do youuuuuuuuuuuu do it?! I have a selection of Koh-i-Nors, Prismas and Polychromos, mainly because I’m a fickle magpie, but also because I like the different lead textures. Want to spread colour and blend without too much effort? Soft Koh-i-Nors. Want to create more definition? Then I go for the harder Prismas and Polychromos. But that's just me.
So, grass… Normally I would colour the grass last, but I thought it might be easier to see just the grass, so I’ve coloured the image twice, (three times if you include my photo whoopsie) which is why, when you get to the end, the grass will look different...

Now, with a slightly darker green, I’ve started adding little flicks of colour to mimic the blades of grass.

This time I’ve used a pine green shade in little ‘v’ flicks, more of this colour around the back and right side of Mae, because obviously it’s darker there.

Finally I’m on my darkest green, in single flicks, making sure I have no white showing through. I’ve also added some very random, black strokes, again, more on the right side, just to add some extra depth and texture.

ReplyDeleteHi Sweetie! Thank you for stopping by this week. We're back in action now, with power and internet and still no explanation as to why we were catapulted back to the Dark Ages last week! Hope you're managing to stay dry in Derby. It's so horrendous here that pairs of animals are starting to form an orderly queue. Two weeks to go and we're on holiday - can't wait. Love this tutorial and am defo going to give this grass technique a go. I've got Prismas and Faber Castells but prefer the Prismas. Hope you and SC are OK. Hugs, Tracey xx

Super tutorial, Fluff, now can you do one for Copics please! And thank you for the headsup re the cloud tutorial at SOG. I have checked it out and might even give it a go but I think I'll colour the clouds before colouring my image! hugs, Lesley
ReplyDeleteWow Faye, love the way you coloured that grass! I must say that I rarely touch my pencils (I have Derwents and the odd pencil from various brands so I have a larger variety of colours) these days; it's mostly Copics and sometimes Distress Ink on this end. But I totally agree with you that pencils are very easy to use. Hugs, Frea
